ZB needs HP

Well...I pulled the ZB for the first time in an open class. Bad move but that was the day I could go. Pulled about 35 ft in the 5000# and 88 ft in the 4500# class I think. Did not wheelie or spin out.

At least it ran and did not need towed away all day. Not too bad for the first time pulling or even running in many years. Gas looks muddy, need to clean the tank, all the old dry stuff coming loose. Sounded like a little miss under heavy load. Might have to freshen it up this winter.

Met some nice folks and had some fun but sure was hoping to test the wheelie bars....

So how much money to build an open class ZB?

Are you pulling low gear? A good running ZB should spin out in 4500 lb easily. Put it on dyno see what it's doing,(and then set carb and timing right on dyno). You should be able to get about 40 hp,(with a lot of mid and low rpm torque) out of it with stock head and pistons. If you pulled low gear it sounds like you arent running right.

Yep, low gear. Nothing like taking it for its first test drive and pulling it the next day! It sounded like a small miss under load. Exhaust smells rich. Need to run compression test and figure it out after harvest.

Depends on what kind of classes you will be pulling. You could strip it down to 3500#. A set of aluminum pistons and rings with a bore job could cost you $500. Swap to a propane head, intake manifold, and ZT exhaust that comes straight up. if you clean up the ports, you'll do pretty good. No reason for a ZB not to make 50 h.p. If you'd like some more easy tips feel free to e-mail me. Much more to tell. These motors are a little different!

thanks MOPOWER, I have to get through harvest and a few other projects first this fall, then take a look at it. Might have to play with it some if I get my G1000 lp and 4Star sold.

There was another Z at the pull, ran sweet and was on race gas. Love the smell!
