Just got a 335 utility,1956 model that is burning oil. I figured it was rings, but did a compression check and found 150lbs compression on #'s 1 thru 3 and 145 lbs on #4. Don't have manuals yet, but they are ordered. All four plugs covered in oil. though it starts and runs good. Also it carries 25 lbs oil pressure at idle. Could I be looking at a head problem? Pulled valve cover and don't really see any obvious problems there. Drained gas thinking someone maybe put oil in gas, but fresh gas and still same thing. Anyone got any ideas. thanks in advance. Check for blow-by when rinning. Blow-by is an indication of leakage past the rings. If there isn't any, then it is likely the valve guides/stems/seals need work.

We have a Jet Star 2 that burns lots of oil yet has mucho power and compression. I believe the problem lies in your valves and worn valve guides. They tend to wear on these engines over time and seep oil in to the combustion chamber. I think we may just do a head job on ours and leave it at that. Compression and oil pressure are good.

Most likely your oil rings are worn out-Or they're like a set in an engine I just took apart and were'nt installed correctly. (Both the wipers were below the expander.)
I have seen Ford type vale stem seals on the intake valves of those engines. You can try that first, but I'd bet the real problem is the rings.

I tend to agree on the rings being the problem Kelvin. I found some specs on the net today and it seems to indicate compression should be 175 to 210 psi for the heads on this tractor. Without knowing, I thought 150 was pretty good. Now, after I get the manuals, I'll have to find a source for rings, bearings, gaskets, etc. I thank you for the info. Really don't want to dig too deep until I have a manual in front of me. Been 40 years since I was inside one of these engines,so think I really should use the crutch.Again, thanks. Bob D. (La)
