We have a 1963 M602 which we used regularly until recently. The low range on the "Ampli-Torc" went out about 10 years ago, and I think the high range just went out. Can you by-pass or freeze this so that it is in direct drive to the regular transmission? Is there a kit needed for this? I know you have to split the tractor to work on this, but is it a feasible job for a "shade-tree mechanic" otherwise? Thanks for your help.

I am not aware of any such kit but that sure doesn't mean there isn't such a thing. You would have to split the machine either way. I have had a couple of bad torque amplifiers on M5's. I have removed them and sent them to Welters to be rebuilt. The job can be intimidating the first time but it's not bad. Have the necessary books with you and follow the instructions to the letter and all will be fine.

How much does a rebuild cost?

I'm sure it depends on how bad things are but $400 should cover it which includes shipping the thing back and forth.
