Working on a 602 steering leak. The orings in the steering box at the shaft are no trouble but....oil was also pouring out a vent on top of the casting behind and under the radiator. What is most likely causing this? I have the radiator pulled and the casting cleaned up. (only snapped off two of the bolts) so I will be drilling them out and waiting on advice where to go from here. THANKS.

Yeah, makes good sense that oil (and it was hydraulic) had to be coming from somewhere. The gear box was also full of hydraulic oil. Proceeding to get the steering piston out is another matter, some previous owner has WELDED the center steering arm to the vertical steering shaft. The bright side is the guy was a 5hit welder and it is not solid but how I am going to get a grinder in some of those places to take his chicken scratch out is another story none the less. I am anxious to get the piston out because the way it was leaking there has to be a oring or piston ring completely gone.

This power steering design is a mess..... why couldn't they kept the G705 type with a external cylinder???? Freddy's previous owner may have had the right idea, a line back to the resovoir would have been simpler....but still a rig. I guess I'd rather fix it right. I'd rather have 90 wt in that gear box too.

Thanks guys, any more tips you can offer is greatly appreciated.

It might be that your steering cylinder is bypassing oil into the gears. there is a two way cylinder with liners that helps steer the tractor. it sits under the radiator. has hydraulic lines on each side and basically pushes the ram back and forth. My 66 G1000 has a line from that hole back to the reservoir. I need to rebuild the front end steering too. the previous owner rigged it up that way I was told to get back his oil.

Freddy is right. I have a jetstar that leaks out the steering shaft. I guess if I used it much it'd also leak out the vent. Its because the seals aren't holding on the ram.
