Which marks on flywheel need to line up with pointer? There are about 3 different marks that are fairly hard to read. We have had a mag go bad and are installing an earlier bosch and haven't had any luck. We have no books and any help would be appreciated. Thanks Phone #636-541-0576

Problem is the flywheel marks will go by the pointer twice. Pull the #1 spark plug and crank the engine until #1 is at tdc of the compression stroke. To determine when you are on the compression stroke, either look into the spark plug hole using a flashlight and watch the intake valve or pull the valve cover and watch the intake valve. Stop after it closes and the piston is not quite at the top. You want to stop before the mag impulse has clicked. If the mag is on, take the cap off and look to see which terminal is next and that will be #1. If the mag is not on, post another message and we can deal with that. Be sure you hear the impluse working. You may also be able to determine which wire is firing when #1 goes past tdc and rotate your wires on the mag cap accordingly.

The mag is off now. Is it suppose to fire when on tdc? I tried to check for compression stroke by holding something in spark plug hole, but guess I keep getting it off. Is the coupling piece between the mag & tractor suppose to have the drive dogs 90� from each other? I am assuming the intake valves are on the same side as the intake manifold?

The coupling dogs are 90 degrees off each other, but that doesn't matter its just a coupler. The intake valves are on the same side as the intake manifold. With the impulse, it will fire a little past tdc. Go ahead and go past tdc so the mag is easy to align with the coupler and use the procedure. One more thing to check: this mag is counter clockwise isn't it? If you just picked up another Bosch mag it may not be CCW. Have you also checked the mag for spark and are you checking for spark to the end of the wire? On a Bosch the retard lever can also be used to kill the mag. If its in the wrong position, you won't get any spark.
