I have a Minnieapolis-Moline model R according to decal. I am having trouble finding points. The tractor has what appears to be a Mag Fairbanks-Morse type _ not readable. It has a 6 volt coil hooked to points so I assume the previous owner had mag failure and attached a coil. I guess the points would not care where the fire came from. Is this a common temp repair? How will I find points? Have been to many parts houses with no luck looking at pictures to match up. The mag is rectangular about 3 by 5 inches. Please email me if you can help. I want to sell when I get it running, very cheap Dave

Last time I needed mag parts I called a place in Chicago. The phone number is 1800-magneto.
I hope that helps.

The 'type' data was stamped somewhere on your Magneto, not necessarily in the little square next to the 'FM'. If its a FM(J), there will be a little gear/shaft in the cap to turn the rotor.
If its a FM(X), the gear and shaft that the rotor fastens to will be on the same plate inside the mag. housing the points mount to.
(If your mag turns a disk and the cap has carbon wipers to distribuite the fire, it is some other model (I forgot which))

Actually, If I'm not mistaken, I think the same points fit either one, FMJ or FMX with the exception that there was a set for Right hand and a different set for Left hand rotation. They are available at NAPA.

That conversion was apparrently popular for tractors around here. My ZTU ran like that for 2-3 years on a FMJ until I replaced the mag with the distribuitor and drive from a Farmall Cub.

Dave, I think I got the last set I needed at the NAPA store. They have a picture book.
