I just bought a '61 G-VI and it has the standard M&M 5-spd transmission and hand clutch. Both are in fine shape.

What was the last BIG tractor that M&M used this transmission in?

How did the successor transmissions and rear ends hold up in the BIG horsepower tractors? The old 5-spd and the old rear ends always seem to hang together fine.

Thanks

The last big tractor to use that transmission and rear end was the G-707 & G-708. They followed the G-705 & 706. Some rear end problems can occur especially in the two wheel drive models if pulled extremly hard. The early G-1000s had some problems but the G-1000 Vista had a strong final drive set up using 4" axels and bull gears I beleive. We farmed with three of these for years and one that we bought new pulled heavy loads with duals in third low and second low and high at times and never has been opened up. Not even the ample torque has ever needed repairs. Only one new clutch and a major overhaul at 5000 hrs. We lugged them a lot with some of the largest equipment available from John Deer and others in the late sixtys and seventys. They would pull down but come roaring right back.

Russ, The last big moline with a 5 spd was the G1350 or the A4T-1600. The successor transmissions and rear ends are the White/Oliver 6 spd w/ 3spd o/u. These durable drivelines were coupled to the powerful 451 and 585ci MM engines in the 1870 and 2270 White tractors respectively. These rugged and rare workhorses still farm the prairie wheatlands of Canada, the Dakotas and Minnesota.

The GIV thru the G708 used a similar rear end in design and shape. The early G1000's had a totally different rearend design, more of a caged system. Where the bull gears are held on the inside not just on the outside of the gear. MM went thru like 5 of these rearend combinations getting to the 50 series. My G1000 Wheatland (66) has the third change in rearend. My brothers G1000 Vista (69) has the 4th and my dad's G950 (71)has the Fifth change. (We won't mention the G1350 which could be looked as change #6). One of the most visable changes was the change in ring gear and pinion ratio change (9 by 49) with the 50 series. (G950 rearends used in the A4T series.) Which then led to a final drive ratio change, different bull gears and bull pinions . Our G950 (71) and our G900 (69) look the same but inside are really different.
