I know very little about tractors but an acquaintance has a 1957 445 Universal tractor for sale with an all-hydraulic loader, which has partially homemade mounting arms. Someone has slightly bent the main vertical loader supports which are located near the center of the tractor. This was caused by the rather poor condition of the angled loader support arms, which extend from the top of the main vertical supports to a bracket mounted on the front of the tractor on two bolts extending through the casting just above the pivot clevis. The angled support arms should be rebuilt and remounted to a better bracket near the front of the tractor.

Can someone describe where the angled support arms should be mounted?? There appears to be at least two options. One is to make a better bracket for the front of the tractor, mounting it to two bolts extending through the casting just above the pivot clevis, which is where it is currently mounted; the other is to make a bracket which mounts to the two available bolt holes in the steel front engine mount, which also supports the power steering pump on the left side. However, this location may have too great an offset from the frame to withstand the torque on the bracket.

Any advice will be appreciated. I do have an IT manual for reference, although these areas are not well illustrated. Thanks.

Dave

Dave,
The set of factory mounts I have for a 4 Star, which is basically the same as a 445 Universal, are made from at least 1/2" steel plate. There is a plate that bolts to all three 3/4" bolt holes on the front casting (where the weight bracket bolts on). There is another plate about 3 inches away and parallel to the first one that has holes for bolting the front of the loader frame to it. There is another piece of plate that goes on the top of the first two to form a 'C' with the open side down. Between the first two pieces are 3 approx 3" long pieces to space them & hold in place. All these are welded together & make a rather sturdy mount.

Thanks for the response, John. Your description provides a pretty good visual picture of the mounting location and the type of mount. I have to look at those mounting bolts in the casting again because the first time I couldn't find the bolt heads inside the casting. Only the threaded end was visible outside the front of the casting.

Are the bolt heads accessible, or does something have to be removed to access them?

Thanks again.

Dave,
The casting is threaded for 3 3/4" bolts on each side & the bolts screw into it through the bracket. Maybe someone has put studs in the holes? The reason for the mounts being made as spacers is so the area where the loader mounts is the same width as the U302 frame. The JetStar3 uses a heavy flat bar from the short front frame on them, to the bolts on the bellhousing. The loader then bolts to that bar. If your loader is one built by Schwartz for MM, the front mount sits slightly behind the lower rear edge of the hood panel. I think that is correct but don't have one mounted anymore so not positive.

John,
If you find this email, I hope you do not mind if I bother you one last time (I hope!). I thought I had a pretty good picture of the loader mounting setup, but now I think I was wrong after reading your last email a couple more times.

Does a single loader bracket mount to the very front of the tractor with bolts or studs in the large casting located ahead of the radiator, which is where the current loader bracket is mounted? Or, are there two brackets, one on each side of the tractor, mounted in the three threaded holes in the casting which houses the power steering unit and also supports the front of the engine??

I first thought the bracket mounted in front of the radiator, but there are only two studs located there now and two more bolts above the studs, for a total of four, not three. Also, One of the studs is somewhat loose and I can feel a sleeve around it under the casting...maybe it's a spacer of some sort.

Anyhow, that location didn't seem to fit your description very well, and I thought maybe I had the wrong location in mind. Then I decided there should actually be two brackets, one on each side. Are you aware of any photos on this site showing the loader mounting??

Thanks,
Dave Koch
