335 bad ring gear

My new to me 335 has a ring gear that has some pretty chewed up teeth. the bendix is getting stuck or not engaging, about every 3rd time. The bendix gears look brand new, but two were chewed up, must have got stuck on the ring gear. My first look at the ring gear teeth shows them to be rounded off, and I can see why the starter gets stuck or doesn't engage. Can I use a die grinder to clean up the ring gear teeth through the inspection hole? How hard is it to replace? If I do replace it, what else should be looked at?

I had the same problem with my 335 11 years ago. it had sections that were really bad, but others that looked good! I tried dressing them up for a temporary fix, with mixed sucess. The real fix is replacing the ring gear, which requires splitting the tractor. At the time I could get one from the local White dealer. While in there I would get the flywheel resurfaced, and replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and the front seal in the transmission. There is no real seal in the rear main of the engine. Pay attention to the setting the heights of the clutch release fingers. If not correct, a lot of work to get back to, and you don't find out until it's way too late!! Have fun!

Dennis,
is there any problem with filings from the ring gear getting into anything critical if I dress the teeth through the little looking port? what is the easiest way to turn the engine a bit to get to better teeth? Can I turn the pto or belt pulley? I really need to use it this week.

you won't put that many grindings in there, and it is only a temporary fix, if it works. To make it easy to turn over, remove the sparkplugs, then you should be able to spin it without much trouble with the fan.
