445 M/M pto clutch lock-nut and lock-washer

I have the tractor casting open exposing the rear end/pto clutch area for determining the cause of the operators engaging lever not able to engage pto clutch. I have discoverd the lock nut was backed completly off and floating freely on the un-threaded portion of the pto drive shaft preventing the operator's-pto-lever from compressing the yoke which engages the pto clutch. My question is why did this back off? Now, the lock washer seems not to lock, so how is it supposed to work? The tab was matched and bent to the flat area on the lock nut. I can screw the lock-nut with the lock-nut-washer in tow with tab still at the flat; therefore the lock washer is turning when I am turning the nut, hince no locking capability. Is this nut just to keep the position of the clutch on the shaft or is it an adjustment for the clutch operation. I realize the clutch location on the pto shaft needs a clearance of ~0.018-0.022" between the back of clutch to the front of the beveled pinon. If I can't rely on the lock washer to prevent the lock nut from again backing off; do you guys have any idea of an alternative to lock the nut in place. I just do not want to pull the pto shaft if I don't have to. I have a home built 3-pt system and the cross bar runs in front of the hyd pump making it impossible to remove the pump without taking the 3-pt frame off first. This is not an easy job!!!!! Please give this some thought and help this ole' country boy out. Thank y'all fer da help. Stan

Stan,

If I remember correctly, the lock washer is supposed to have a tab on the inside hole that sticks rearward into the keyway slot in the PTO hub that is keyed to the main shaft. The clearance you mention is adjusted by adjusting the socket head set screw with the cotter pin through it. Adjust this & hold the hub rearward with the nut loose first before tightening the the lock nut as the set screw won't take much tightening without breaking due to the holes for the cotter pin.

You might be able to turn the washer 180 degrees & punch a portion into the key way to make it lock but it won't be easy.
