M-M has always produced by far the best engines put in tractors or otherwise. HD800 has been called "the standard by which all other pump engines are measured". The Gs and Us plowed day after day for years with little wear. Zs and Rs had a simple engine design like no other company. The little Jet Stars put out more h.p. per dollar than anyone else in their day. M-M parts are simple to interchange with other models. LP, Gas, and Diesel were all used with success. What do you M-M people have to say about these engines. What was the best?

Of course this is debatable, but I guess it would have to be the 283 in the U tractor, just from the sheer number that are still around.

It was pretty much overbuilt from the factory. And from what I read here, you can take a 40-45 hp 283, bolt on the right OEM parts and get up to 90 hp. and it'll still hold together for field work.

My favorite to work on is the 206, all variations. Not so much to lug around.

Dang you ask a hard question. I got a 283, a 336, and a 504 all with oner 9000 hrs on them. Almost all trouble free. I burnt a valve on the 283. Other than that it has been trouble free. It would be a tough one to choose. That ol 504 shure has a lot of power tho. Sooooo I'll have to think about it awhile. Larry

Don't I remember reading somewhere in a reprint of an advertisement of an HD800 pump engine in CA running something like 200,000 hours with only normal maintenance and rebuilds? Think it was in PGR or Corresponder. I have a THD800 on my sawmill and I am very impressed.
