to try and make a long story short, my jet star 3 wasnt charging. according to an article i found you polarized the system by momentarily shorting the field terminal wire to the b+ wire at the regulator. i did this and then it carged. the next day the battery was dead-it was 6 years old, so i replaced it (no big deal, right?) after installing the battery i walked away to do some yard work...a bit later i cuold smell something and looking around noticed smoke rolling from the tractor. the ammeter was pegged a -30 amps, and the regular was buring hot. what happened and how do i fix it? i need the tractor for yard work (new house) and dont want to not be able to use the lights, and have to keep chrging my battery because it wont charge while running. any help would be great!!

Your jetstar does have a generator, right? Some Jet3supers had alternators and you don't polarize a regulator on an alternator system.

What has happened is the contacts in your regulator have stuck together.

Although if you can get the cover off, you can clean those contacts, in order to avoid future problems, you probably need a new regulator and you need to get the generator checked. The dead short through it may have damaged it, too.

I was told by a local implement dealer that it was a generator. the only difference is that an alternator has a voltage recifier to turn the ac voltage into dc voltage, right? the unit is about 10 in long, and if it is it looks nothing like an automotive alternator.
