Steering on a Z

My 1950 ZAU narrow front tractor is getting a lot of play in the front end. I replaced the U joint on the steering shaft and tightened the nut at the steering box and the nut between the two tires, and all that is now tight, but I still have almost a half a steering wheel of play. The steering shaft going into the box is not moving back and forth at all, but it is turning a half a turn. This gets to be a problem going down the road as the front wheels want to wobble back and forth real fast and will almost shake the wheel out of your hand.

I guess my question is what in the front end could be loose or worn causing this??? Is the steering shaft connected to the worm gear with a pin or something that could be worn or do you suppose the gears themselves are worn out?? Any Ideas, Im sure out of them?? I guess the next step is to tear the entire front end apart and see what is going on in there.

To inspect the gears remove radiator and grill and under them is a steel plate covering the worm and sector gears. You should be able to see the problem then. Good Luck

Thanks Steve. Is it normal for those gears to wear out and create that much play??? This tractor had a loader on it most of its life, but does not any more.

Could you please keep us posted when you find the problem and solution? I have a 48 ZTU with the same problem. I would like to know any info before I tear into it. Will do the same if I find time to work on mine before you.

Sure, be glad to tell you what I find. I dont know when I am going to get to it though, my Z is busy running a 4 basket tedder right now. Also I am afraid if I take that radiator off it is going to start leaking, it is not in the best shape, so when I tear into it I need to be prepared to have the radiator re cored. I was hoping I could fix the problem without messing with the radiator but it doesnt look like it. I really need to fix the wobble before something breaks and runs me off the road, but if it is just wear in the gears it should not break I suppose.
