Another generator question

I have a 41 Z with a generator with only a cutout relay. I try to wire it according to diagram, wire from ammeter to armature, field terminal to cutout, cutout to light switch. The problem is as soon as I connect the armature to the ammeter I have about 20 amp discharge, no other wires connected! I have several other generators including new and all act the same. As I understand it the generator should be grounded externally through the light switch or the lights. Can someone tell me where I am wrong and how to correct it? Just to mention-magneto ignition so no ignition switch. I had a generator with three coil saddle regulater on tractor and working but it does not fit under the hood very well. I have the correct light switch with resister.

What was the source of that wiring diagram... I'd like to see a copy... WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

Don't want to bad mouth anyone about the diagram. Just to let you know everything works fine now and thanks for all the input.

Steve - your wiring is not right! This is how my '47 UTU is wired up - it works fine:

1 - Gen "F" teminal to the field resistor terminal on the light switch.

2 - Gen "A" to cutout "A".

3 - Cutout "B" to the ammeter.

If the cutout has an F terminal on it (some do...), leave it unconnected.

Once you've got everything connected and the battery hooked up, momentarily jumper the A and B terminals at the cutout to polarize. You should be good to go!

thanks for the help. The cut-out on the ammeter side made sense to me but none of my literature showed that, if the cutout is not on that side how would the battery be disconnected. I thought maybe the generator was only grounded through the cutout, and circut only complete if cutout is closed. Thanks again

Could the gen just need "Polarizing"? Maybe it;s charging OK, just backwards? 20 amps sounds about right for charge.

2 thoughts:

1. Are the wires on the correct terminals of the cutout?

2. (This only works if you can remove the cover)Are the contacts stuck together?
