jet star 3 charging problem

My jet star has a newish (1yr.old) gen. and regulator, but it wont charge. My manual only gives output specs, nothing on diagnosis. Even after the new gen. when the lights were turned on the ammeter would read discharge, and without lights, would barely read above 0. Now it just sits on zero and my battery keeps going dead, any help would be great!

Ed, it may be that the system is over charging the battery. The regulator controls the amount of charge. It should be adjustable. Any chance you have a 12 volt regulator on a 6 volt system?

Ed, I would consider the voltage regulator as a problem. It opeerates as a "switch" that controls the charging current to the battery. If is is stuck closed it will allow the generator to over charge the battery. Also, it will drain the battery when the engine is off.

it is a 12 volt system on this tractor, im not sure that it always was, but it is now. i went to get a new battery, but it was currently out of stock, and they will have them in a couple of days, ill see what happens then.

Aren't all JS3's equipped with an alternator? You don't polarize alts. My 66 has one. IF yours has the alt, maybe you don't have the 12volt line to the side terminal hooked up to power? This line excites the regulator, to start charging. Wait, this is internal reg type only maybe. If you have a volt meter, with engine running at battery you should get close to 14.5 volts for good charging. You can also get that off big stud on alt maybe? One wire to ground. Maybe it's off the big wire to battery on the reg for external regulator?

it does have a generator, and i polarized it and now it charges, the only problem now is that my battery bubbles out the vents? why is this?

Ed,

Go to page 2 of the John Deere board on this website and look for the thread started as "John Deere 60" by John N and with answers by Clooney, John T. and T213R. Clooney's and John T's answers will walk you thru any problem you have. One word of caution though, don't short that field terminal on the regulator to anything but ground, i.e. Bat or A terminal as you will fry that new regulator in a heartbeat. Hope this helps.

i found an article on this site that said to momentarily short the b+ wire at the regulator to the field terminal wire on the gen, did i fry something now that i did this? it was showing a charge on the ammeter, but the next day the batt was dead, so i jump started it and now it reads zero on the ammeter, and the battery is bubbling?

When you "open" the charging circuit that uses a generator and regulator you must make sure the current is flowing in the correct direction. Loosen the generator so that the pulley is free to rotate without any belt tension on it. Turn on the key and observe the generator pulley. If it turns that indicates the electricity is running backwards through the circuit. The generator is actually receiving electricity and acting as a motor. The box the regulator came in should have instructions or if you have an older auto manual it should have the information on how to reverse or polarize the circuit. If you can not find any, let me know, and I will look it up. It is a very simple process that involves shorting two terminals on the generator. I do not remember which two.
