GBD oil-level problems ADVICE?

I keep a GBD and drive it around once in a while. The oil level was high since I puchased it a couple years ago. No anti-freeze in the oil and pressure was 25-30, so I was not too concerned. I figured it needed an oil & filter change before I use it hard, so I drained the oil (which was over full) to find that it seemed thin. About 8 gallons worth. It had a diesel smell, but used oil in a diesel might. What might be the problem? The engine is tired and takes a few minutes to warm up and run smooth. Hydraulic over-flow is designed to go to the crankcase. Could it be diesel or hydraulic oil? How would diesel get in the crankcase? How much should it hold when I refill? Thanks for any help you can give me!

What is the difference in a row crop and wheatland G-1000? I see a reply from "Roger" last year in response to the same question I'm asking concerning installling a PTO on a supposedly "wheatland". Roger wrote that he had PTO parts for a row crop, so I assume they won't work on a wheatland that has no factory PTO, but has a plate cover where a PTO would be.
Thanks to anyone and especially Roger if he is still out there and reads this.

I believe the PTOs are one and the same. The wheatland had a big platform and a heavy front axle as well as big fat tires. Most did not have a PTO. A row crop had an adjustable front axle and either 18.4 34 or 38" tires on the rear. I have seen ads with a narrow front and a single front wheel. A wheatland did more plowing and didn't usually require a PTO.

I had the same problem on my 5 Star Diesel. It was the transfer pump shaft seal. It is a pretty easy repair.

Our U Diesel was always overfull in the crankcase. The seal in the transfer pump was leaking and putting diesel fuel in the oil.

Your engine could be "making oil", essentially not burning the diesel fuel do to low compression/leaking rings. If it is excessive for the use then it could be an injection pump seal, but it seems more likely that the engine is wore out. It is probably worse if you are puttering around and not getting it really warm.

Ethan,
Our Case 500 diesel did the same thing. Leaked the contents of the fuel tank into the crankcase. I was told it was the transfer pump seals on the side of the Bosch PSB pump. I drained the oil/fuel mixture and its sat there ever since so I can't verify if this is the fix. Does your GBD still have the original Bosch PSB pump or have you switched it over to a Roosa-Master?

Brian

It is the original pump. When the thing is warm, it runs well, but get too low an RPM and pbpbpbpbpb! Dead. It will not even puff smoke when cranking. It has to have RPM to get fuel so I am thinking bad seals somewhere. Compression may be low, but it sound so nice when it is running and has great power above idle. Brian, you around after Memorial Day? I may get down in a month or so with your parts and also just bought a M670 Diesel w/ loader in Marquette. Thanks fellas for the advice. Looks like $$$ to fix the GBD? I love this beast of a machine.

Ethan;

Some good advice from these folks. I agree probably a seal leakage diluting the oil and losing the pressure you need to fire up the old beast and keep it idling. don't worry about the morning smoke until it warms up, it is somewhat characteristic of the Lanova injection systems. Take care of the old treasure! Phil

Thanks Phil, it will be taken care of. I really wanted to build a puller but not out of this one. It is way too nice!!!

I had a G1000 do the same thing. It was diesel fule leaking past the seals on the ing. pump drive shaft. Or it could be runing to cold and not burning all the fuel. May need a new thermostat.
