1950 MM RTU questions

I just acquired my first MM tractor and am trying to learn more about it. It is a 1950 RTU and is complete but not running. I have some questions that I am hoping some of the MM experts can help me with.

1. What lights should be on a 1950 RTU...the 7" flat lens or something smaller?
2. Do the lights mount on the nose?
3. Did the tractor come from the factory with fenders? Mine has none.
4. Can someone send a picture of the rear of a similar year RTU to show me how the original seat and rear platform look? 5. Did it leave the factory as 6 or 12 volt and positive or negative ground?

I'm sure I'll have more questions and I hope to acquire some manuals soon but in the mean time I thought the MM experts could offer some information.

I appreciate any help and insight you can give me. Feel free to email me directly.

Clayton

Clayton,
All 1950 and older R models used the 7" flat lens lights. They switched to the later/smaller ones as Jim described in 1951. Serial # 00102155 (or 0015002155) is the break point for headlights and is also the last RTU built in 1950. I'll try and email you a rear shot of our 1950 RTE so you can see the seat set up.

Brian

Clayton,

Brian is right, as usual, on the headlight matter. I was thinking they changed to the smaller light when they changed sheet metal on the R in mid 1949. I should add though to my previous answer that the serial number break on the fenders is 0015001155/0015001156. Hope this helps.

Clayton,

To answer your questions:

1. Your headlights should be the next size smaller than the 7", about a 5 1/2" curved lens, having the same bullet shape.

2. The lights mount on the sides of the radiator shell by means of two brackets.

3. Fenders (wheel guards in M-M parlance) were an option, your 1950 RTU could take the flat or clam shell fender depending on your serial #.

4. Your tractor did not have a pan seat but the chair type with a square cushion and a padded back rest. The platform will look like all the rest of the R's you will see.

5. All R's were 6 volt positive ground from the factory.

Hope this helps.

Jim

I'm questioning the deluxe seat: I've got a '49 RTU with a pan seat on the flote-ride seat setup.

Kelvin,

I may have been wrong about the lights but I'm right on the seat. They used the deluxe seat from 1948-1950. Starting in 1951 they went back to the pan seat on the Flote-Ride (Knoedler) suspension. A lot of things can get changed in 50+ years. Heck, I've got a 1948 RTE with a Farmall seat suspension.
