piston rings on a 445

I have started assembling my engine. I purchased .040 pistons and .040 over piston rings and had the blocks bored out to .040 over.
My question is, when the piston rings are assembled to the piston is the gap at where the end of the rings meet important? When purchasing them is a set, is that gap correct from the manufacture ? If this gap is not is there a procedure to set it correctly?

My question is, when the piston rings are assembled to the piston is the gap at where the end of the rings meet important? YES, VERY, TOO MUCH AND YOU'LL HAVE SOME BLOWBY AND TOO LITTLE YOU WILL GET THE PISTON STUCK.

When purchasing them is a set, is that gap correct from the manufacture ? USUALLY If this gap is not is there a procedure to set it correctly? YES, THERE IS A SPECIAL GRINDER THAT YOU CAN MAKE THE GAP BIGGER WITH.

When necessary, I always opened the ring gap a little with a file, holding the ring in a vise with soft jaws.

most times all the rings in the set have enough gap, however I check every ring. Sometimes I find one or too that are just too close.

the specs are .010-.020 for the compression rings, .010-.018 for the oil ring. (I'll bet some sets don't even come under the .020 spec) This is for new rings, worn rings will have larger gaps, for the gap will spread as the outside of the ring wears.

The reason for the gap is the ring will expand around its circumference when warm. Since it is confined in the hole, the ends of the gap will be closer together.

The only time I saw the results of too little ring gap was on a motorcycle. The ends (at the gap) of the ring tried to climb over each other, resulting in broken piston lands as well as broken rings and a scored cylinder.
