I have a 1956 445 and with a couple of rust through holes on the 28 inch rear rims. They hold air mainly because they have been plugged with some type of silcon and I believe they are tubed. Working to get this thing back to some type of spit and polish shape. HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS, in anyones educated opinion can the holes be spot welded closed then ground smooth? I have a professional welder close at hand, so if it can be done he could do it. Should I replace the rims, and if its the later are bolt patterns basicly the same with other brand tractors of that age? Even if they are a tad larger than the 28 inches? For the most part this is a light duty use machine, so it doesn't get worked too hard. I know this sounds like a stupid question but I'm just starting out as a restorer and educated opinions will be needed for a while. Thanks, Choreboy, Semp Fi.

I've got one rim on a '38 Z that had a 1/2" wide gap rusted in one side of the rim where it clamped onto the wheel disk. A local welder closed up that hole for me. I don't know, probably he welded in a piece of metal for a patch, but its such a good job you can't tell it.

Those 28" rims are the type that bolt to a drive plate that bolts on the hub, right? If so, shouldn't be too hard to find rims. I'm thinking Allis Chalmers used that kind of rims, and I think Ford did too.

Great, thanks from the reply. I will need to replace the tires at some point. So when I can scratch up some better rubber, I think I will see what the welder can do. Really the holes aren't that big and look to be in a good spot, if their is such a thing. These rims are what I call spin out width adjustable rims so I really want to try to keep them. It's good to know other brands if all else fails will work. Really don't see allot of MM around these parts so finding anything is always a time consuming task. Thanks again, I'm sure I will have other questions in the future. I'm really thankful you, any, and all take the time to help each other out. All of us are smarter than any one of us.

I don't know if power adjust rims are available new or not, but Allis Chalmers WD45 used those same 28" power adjust rims. I think all the parts work: adjuster clamps, drive center and all.
This is just a FYI: Good luck fixing what you've got.

I have an 445 that must have had a more serious rim problem. Also has power adjust rims. One of the rims has had about 18" piece insert welded in to replace a problem area.Apparently the repairman found a similar size rim and cut out a section in way of the step in the drop center.Even though the repair is in that difficult stepped portion it is a near perfect job.The weld was not ground off but it could have been and it would not be noticed. The repaired section is 3.5" x 18"

Thank you both, Kevin and Ol Chief,
First things first I need to locate some back rubber. It has 13.6 by 28" right now. Once I have done that I think I will clean up what I have and turn it over to my welder and see if he can spot it up. I don't believe the holes will be as large what has been described, so band aids should work. If all else fails Allis's rims will be easier to locate in this area. Again thanks for the information. Couldn't do this without it. Choreboy, Semp Fi,
