hello, on a G1000 VISTA I purchased, the altenator was replaced with one that has a small regulator built on top of it, the original regulator has been disconnected, the alt. looks fairly new but is not showing charge on my hand held gauge. I suspect it was hooked up wrong because there was no wire hooked to the output terminal. what is the correct way to wire this? thank you ray

Don't those use GM alts? Later years you could get a "One-wire" alt and not need regulators OR, also regs inside the alt. Not sure what you got outside??? The main charge wire is a 10 guage to the heavy term on back and to your battery or the starter maybe where the batt cable hooks on to charge. Might also go thru amp guage first. W/out the main lug hooked up, you got Natta! I say pull the unit, take to elect shop, have them run on machine and see if it puts out. You might even be able to remove all that outside junk and put in the self-exciting reg inside to make it one-wire. Then only the one 10 guage wire is needed to charge as noted above. You have to rev engine to 1200 rpm to start it charging, but charges all the way down to idle after that. OR, use standard interior reg, hook up wire from key like normal and no problem with rev to start. If you have the two wire plug on side, you may be OK already, just need the big lead on big nut terminal. NOW, if this is not a GM, then all my info may be bogus! Just going by my Jet Star 3, and a 670 I had once, both having GM alts.

Ray - I'm not familiar specifically with Vistas and their electrics. However from your description it sounds like it's got a Prestolite (or possibly a Motorola) alternator.

Either way there should be a 10 gage or so wire running from the alternator BAT terminal directly to the hot (battery) side of the starter relay - or to the ammeter if there is one). This wire will show battery voltage at all times.

A smaller wire should run to the regulator mounted on the alternator. This wire should show battery voltage only when the ignition switch is "on".
