Starter that won't stop

I bought a '54 MM tractor that had been sitting out in a field for a while. I had to replace the starter to get it going and now, when I tighten down the positive cable to the 12v battery the starter begins cranking. I have replaced the solenoid and that hasn't helped. My next move is replace the push button starter switch and the wiring (which is pretty deterioriated). Does anyone know of anything else I should check on if that doesn't work? Thanks.

Our M5 did that. Found a mud dauber nest attached across the terminals of the starter switch. Cleaned it off and haven't had any problems since.

I suspected the starter switch. I did try cleaning off the terminals, to no avail. It is the original black button switch, so I guess that after 50 years it was due for a new one. Thanks for the replies.

Bob,
Disconnect one of the wires from the switch and try it. This will take the switch out of the loop. If it still tries to start I'd look for shorted out wiring.

Sounds like the switch is bad.

I agree, its probably a sticking starter switch-especially if its the original type switch with the small black button. The plunger rusts and sticks in the switch.
