Bought one, rebuilt the carb, everything looks good, put it on, tractor runs then dies, only way to keep it running is to put your hand over the choke until it takes off again, runs fine for 5 seconds then dies again. I have taken the carb off, re-checked, no problems I can see. Any suggestions? I have several of the MS type carbs that look similar, should I try one of these? what would be compatible to that tractor?

You might have a cracked manifold and it is drawing too much air thus changing the mixture. If you have junk in the tank set up an auxilary tank and bypass yours.

I have several tractors that have acted as yours. As everyone said fuel problem! Don't forget to check the tank, rust can plug the hole in the bottom of tank only allowing a little gas through. You may have to clean and seal tank if its bad enough. An old trick for a slightly rusted tank is to put a short pipe in the sed iment bowl sticking up into tank so you don't get rust off bottom of tank. Good Luck

You may want to check the float in the carburetor. It may have a pinhole leak in it which would drown the float

Sounds like a lean fuel condition. Can you get it to run smoother with the choke part way on? I'm thinking that if you can keep it running you can experiment with the fuel adjustment screws.
Have you tried backing the main fuel mix screw out a turn?
There's also a chance that a tiny bit of trash washed into the main nozzle when you hooked the fuel line to it.

What kind of fuel filter is on it? Some automotive filters are made to work under pressure and won't flow enough fuel bu gravity alone to work properly. Also, I have seem screens in the original filter bowl gummed up with varnish.

Basically, with an open line there should be a good round steady stream out the end of it.
