I'm putting a 4-star back together, discovered the distributor cap does not identify which plug is #1. Doesn't the cap usually come with #1 identified?? (Delco Remy) I am going to buy a new cap anyway but I was confused because my service book doesn't identify #1 either.....jim

To answer your question, No, Delco caps do not have #1 marked. The MM service manuals I've seen do not show which tower on the cap is #1 either.

(They do locate #1 for magneto ignition, because the magneto can only mount one way, and this involves having the oil pump shaft in the correct position also.)

Aftermarket caps do not have it marked either.

I suppose that this was because versions of that same distribuitor were supplied to many different manufacturers and not all used the same tower on the cap as #1.

I allways put it on the 1st left plug wire after the indent and never fails to start on first try.

Take the number one plug out and put your thumb or finger in the hole and turn the engine over. When it blows your finger out of the hole , number one will more than likely be at the top and firing. You can see piston or feel with a short piece of wire. Put rotor on distrubtor and see which way it is pointing. Cap will line up if in correct position anyway that will be number one.---deadeye
