I have a MM and was told it was a U model made in the 50's. The seriel number is partially gone but it starts with the numbers 019. The tag has the letter U. Looking at the numbers listed on this site something doesn't match up. Any help is appreciated.

Bobby,

You've given us the engine serial number, but the tractor serial number should be close. That would make your tractor a 1939 RT square tank. The tractor serial number is on the right side of the transmission case just to the left of the belt pulley housing. Wish the tractor were mine.

Jim

Joan,
There's a serial number reference link on the far left column but here's what you've got anyway:
321630u 1945
337045u 1947
10101662 1956 445 Universal
16600343 1959 4 Star

It is definitly a U and from the looks of the hood and manifold it was an LP version. The tank would appear to be either a Z or an early u tank that has been made to fit.

The tank is correct for a gasoline U. The only difference between a ZA tank and a U tank is the outlet. They are physically the same size. the reason it looks odd is the hood was made to fit the lp tank that was on it at one time.
split-block (283) U's were made between 1948 and 1953. I'm betting yours is a '48 or '49 model. The serial number tag should be on the right side of the transmission case, above the belt pulley.

Garry,
'019' is the start of a serial number for the engine (283A-4) from 1948 through 1953. Look on the right side of the trans housing right above the belt pulley drive for the tractor serial number.

You need to see if you can clean up the the area better. UB special 1955 according to my book starts 09 but the only other thing thats close is a UTC that starts with 015. I could help more with more info, sorry about the educated guesswork, I hope you will save the beautiful machine!!!
