UTS for plowing

Just took delivery on a 1952 MM UTS and plan to pull a plow with it.
The ground that it will work is extremely soddy, with long black roots. It is gumbo type soil that will not scour well at all.
I plowed with a Massey Harris 44 Special last week with a 2 bottom 14" plow and it was all it could do to pull in first gear full throttle.
The plow and tractor were set up properly.

I plan to add another plow for the UTS to pull in addition to the Massey.
I found a gentleman with almost 100 old plows, most pretty much field ready. He has almost all makes and models in his collection.
I will buy one from him, but am not sure what the UTS will handle in this tough ground.
Should I be looking for another 2 bottom or will it handle a 3 bottom?
I would love to try the UTS with my two bottom before I buy another plow, but the old home place is 280 miles from here and I plan to haul the UTS and new plow back at the same time to save a bunch of miles.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

JC,
I pull 3 -16's (Oliver Radex) with my UB.
It plows very well in 2nd gear, but 3rd can only be used in the easiest soils.
Don't know if this really pertains to your job at hand at this moment, but once you get thru the 1st time, you may have the pleasure of hearing a MM U work hard and steady. Good Luck.

Both tractors are the same HP and same size, for now if the MH cannot handle it better then the MM will not do any better, look for a 3-14 that you can take the rear bottom off for first year then possibly put back on later when ground starts working better but it sounds like a disk plow might be a better choice as they were designed for soil that will not scour and designed to cut thry roots instead of jam under the root, anouther good option is a slat mouldboard

If your Massey is in good shape, I'd say you have some hard plowing there. Be a good idea to try the U & see if it will do any better than that Massey before you buy a plow. Ordinarily, I'd think the U would do great with a 3x14" plow, but if the Massey has a hard time, think about a 2x16" plow, or maybe buy a GTB for 3 bottoms.

You didn't say, but it this "New ground" or "Virgin soil"? If so, probably it'll break up better next time. I think John's right, better try the U on the plow you have and see how that works, then make a decision on what plow you want to buy.

It is pretty much the same as virgin soil as it has been 30 years since it was worked up.
It is a field of wire grass mixed with some native grass that has the long black roots that look similar to small tree roots.
I am positive it will work up better next time, but I have to get through it the first time!
I might have to buy a bigger tractor!

That explains it, when I did the same type of ground, the U would only pull 3x14 in low, put the GTB/LP on it and could go in 2nd. TOUGH ground.

U Betcha; Thats a good tractor but no sense looking that hard in the parts and repair manuals.
Since it is almost 300 miles down the road get
your best price to have a local custom farmer in the area do the initial sod breakin'. How many acres are you gonna bust up the first go round?
A bigger rig can come in (maybe after you burn off the field) or have them come in with a good size powered rototiller. Once the hard work and breakdowns have occurred with your contractor your Moline can keep up the yearly maintenance and barely heat up the internal lubricants.

Leroy and JC;

From experience I think the UTS would pull 3 14,s better then the MH 44. Never pulled plows with either tractor but pulled disk,harrow and oneway with them. MH 44 mostly in 2nd or 3rd and MM UB in 3rd or 4th. Both tractors were propane powered.

I woulds think the UTS would be able to pull 3-14's about anywhere. But I have never pulled plows with the U or MH 44.
