I just bought plugs at $8 a piece for my 283-4A (same as U). If this is the going price, it would seem reasonable to machine an adapter to put a similar heat range modern plug. They go for about 1.99 each and should last longer. Has anybody done this or is somebody going to tell me I've been fleeced?

Yes you have been fleeced!! As far as the adaptor, they are already being produced on the market. I have a set that I bought out of Antique Power magazine I think it was. If you use them make sure you put a lot of anti-seize compound on them as alum. and steel do not like to mix well if it sets in one place for awhile. Anti-seize can be purchased at your local parts store.

If you are talking about the big spark plugs,
I think #18 commercial??? But I just bought a couple of sets for about 2$/plug Canadian from a
local automotive supplier, so they are still available.
