What year is your UTS? It is gas or LP, isn't it? It appears from my aftermarket parts catalog, that '44-'52 gas&lp starters use the same bendix drive. That means they should physically fit in the crankcase and the bendix would engage the ring gear. However, from experience, not all Z's have starters with the center bearing on the armature and some may not have 4 field coils. The center bearing keeps the armature from flexing under torque and dragging on the field shoes. Four fields should allow it to develop more torque than two. This case may be actually a starter intended for an R. It would probably be easier to say it s O.K. to use a U starter in a Z, since the torque demand should be less. Around here,(NC) The old timers used a steel wheel subsoiler with a single point. had a rope trip lift to pull it out of the ground. I was told you just put in the ground as deep as your particular tractor will pull it, so depth must have been adjustable somehow.
