'51 UTS front axle

My front axle has been cut and widened and I thought it was the original axle, straight. I've only seen a couple photos {I'm new at this} from '51 and '52 with the axle visible and they have both had a slight arch to them. Not as radical as the cane. Actually the photos are posted here at ytmag.
Any help would be appreciated as I had kinda committed myself to a straight axle in Kansas. Any info on why the '51 and'52 model years are different from previous and later years would answer that "Why?" I've got stuck in my head also.
Thank you for any and all information sent my way.
Sincerely,
Dan

MM changed from the straight beam axle to the slightly arched axle at serial number 01205554, according to my parts books. That would be about midway through 1951 production, according to serial numbers on this site.

The older beam style axle had the tie rod ahead of the front axle. In this exposed positon, it was very easy to bend the tie rod. The tie rods on both my '49 UTSs were bent when I got them.

The later arched axle located the tie rod behind the axle, protecting it somewhat. The later style tie rod uses modern tie rod ends, too. In a comparison test, my '54 has a somewhat smaller turning radius than my best '49 UTS.

The later arched axle was also used on UTS Specials. Variations of this axle were also used clear up to the end of MM production on all or nearly all of MM's standard tread tractors through the end of MM production. I have a '64 Big Mo 400 with a similar axle.
