The governor on my ztu is sluggish.It seems to rev higher than it needs to and is slow coming back to an idle.I ran through the adjustments as per the manual twice.I inspected the governor during the engine overhaul,it seemed to be good.No loose worn parts or stuck parts.I didnt think much about it until I got my U.It responds better and seems to have better control over the engine.I had the carb rebuilt(at dennys)when I overhauled the engine.The throttle shaft came back so tight,I had to hone the bushing so the carb and linkage would drop back to idle.With the linkage disconnected and working the throttle shaft by hand,the engine is really snappy.Is this typical of a Z or should I call Motec for another governor??My M602 governor is ballisticly quick,but it is a different type.Any thoughts?Thanks,Moline

The places those Z governors wear most is where the flyweight carrier contacts the housing. They're supposed to have a special washer there to take up the end play in the shaft, but I've never seen one in an engine I've taken apart.
The other place is the pins that thread through the weights. The end that goes into the 1/2" dia. piece in the middle can wear flat.

That said:

I put a carb kit in our ZB a few years ago, and immediately had "governor trouble". When I finally tracked the problem down, I put the original throttle shaft back in the carburetor. The new "far eastern" (and probably metric dimension) throttle shaft supplied with the kit was binding either in the linkage or in the carburetor itself.

With the link in the carb throttle and disconnected from the governor arm, it should fall closed on its own weight and there should be no binding of the linkage.

If you like the way your 602 governor works call Richard Kenyon in Mo. at 417 669 7387. we have been making adaptor plates to instal governors from those tractors on a Z thanks dennis

Have you tried to straighten the throttle shaft any? How does the governor act when you unhook it for the carb. and run the throttle with your hand? Do you see snappy movement then or not? By doing this you of course you will make it longer. You may want to bend it a little at a time as well until you get what you want out of the governor. I did this on my UTS and it did wonders for it. I think I may have even read this in a service bulletin but I am un sure of that.

Thanks Kevin,I will try that.Yes with the linkage unhooked the governor was trying to work,rather quickly.Straightening the rod makes sense,there is a lot of hand throttle travel before the governor opens up or slows down.That seems normal as the U is also that way.But the U will slowly pickup speed as the handle is pushed forward.The Z seems to jump up and hold and then jump up again as the throttle is advanced.It seems to really be more of an annoyance than a problem.Thanks Moline

I have that exact same problem with my ZAU. It has plenty of power but when you push the throttle foreward the engine speeds up inspurts. Sometimes my gov. sticks open and I have to get off and push the lever back down. I will try those fellas info also.
