Mag on a Za

I heard talk that you can put a mag on a ZA tractor,making it lighter,not needing an gen,starter,or battery but you need diff gears that run the thing.Isn't a mag the same as a dist as far as the set up goes? Can anyone tell me more aboout this.

The dist/mag drive shaft is different for the mag or dist. That shaft also drives the oil pump, I believe it's held in place by a set screw that comes in from the front just below the mag/dist mounting pad.Can't remember, but I think the gear on the cam which drives the dist/mag shaft might have to be changed also.

The mag uses a 12 tooth gear on the oil pump shaft and a 24 tooth mating gear on the camshaft. A distribuitor setup uses the same count (16) teeth on both gears. So to do the change, you have to change both the oil pump gear and the gear on the camshaft that drives that oil pump gear.

That said, A magneto has no advance outside the initial advance that allows you to crank the tractor without kickback. I'm pretty sure you can get more hp out of an engine with a distribuitor, because the amount of ignition advance is tailored to the rpm of the engine.
