Located a 38 UTS complete. Engine stuck, tires poor. High speed road gear. What would this U be worth? Has a fairly low serial # Did all of these early U's have that transmission? 2nd request!!

In 1982 I paid $700 for this nice 1938 UTS MM #310093.It needed nothing and ran great.I'll bet it would run over 25 mph in 5th gear.Still wasnt nearly as fast as my UDLX #310552.

$300-500 would be plenty for the UTS you described.Whats its serial nunmber?

Thanks for the info. Nice picture too. The one I located is serial #310300. It needs a bunch of work but is all there, even the tool box. Fran.

Fran,

With the problems you mention on this tractor I should think it would be worth in the $300-400 dollar range, $500 max if you are really in love with it. It's going to take a LOT of money to bring it back. All the U's up to serial #327401 had a higher speed transmission than the later tractors. The shift pattern was changed at that time, too. I think 30 MPH is a little optimistic, but they will do 20+. Hope this helps.

Jim

Thanks for the advice. I thought maybe this transmission with the top shift patern of 2-3-5 was only used for a year or so and that it might be the same as a UDLX transmission since they were both made in the same year 1938. This must not be the case though. I have seen where others on this site have said they had U s that would go 30+ MPH. What was the purpose of the second shift like lever on a UDLX? Was it used like a high-low to get the extra speed?

The second shift lever on the UDLX is to disengage the other gears from spinning in the tranny, this would be less drag and a lot less noise. This second lever also bypasses the governor and alows direct control of the carb. This is how they milked more speed out of the tractor. At least this is how it was explained to me. Mike

So it probably is the same transmission as the 38 UTS but without the second lever or the governor override. It has the place for the second lever only it is capped.
