Looking for some information. Can anyone make the comparison for me between the MM semi-mounted sickle mowers, like the UM-5, and the MM pull-type sickle mowers? Which came first?
Which did a better job in the field?
What were the major problems with these mowers?
Will modern-day knives and other parts fit in them?
If you had a choice between the semi-mount, or the pull-type mower, which would you choose?

Thank you for your help.

I have a UM-5 that I restored. Universal gaurds from TSC will fit. It does a great job mowing the only falt is getting it on and off the tractor. But it does a good job behind my UB special. Later Chris

My only experience is with a semi-mount and it is a model MO, which was an updated Avery design that MM sold in the 50's. It uses IH sickles, and there is a certain guard (probably IH or New Holland that will fit.) What I like about it is that it is possible to make almost square right hand turns.
It works well with Granddaddy's ZB, but the dealer had to make mounting brackets.
I've been wondering how a J7 (3 point, fully mounted would work.) And if I could find one at a reasonable price.

My grandfather bought what I think was the J7 new with a bronze Jet. Got to be hard to find guards for in the 70s Was a royal pain to mount. Did a good job mowing when on stayed right with a 501 ford we had
