I have a '47 UTS in need of (considerable)restoration. It was sitting on a place I bought a number of years ago in western Montana. It has a one-piece head rather than the usual 2-piece ones. Does anybody know why they made some (damn few, I'm told)in this configuration? Are the other parts any different (manifolds etc.)?
Are they any more valuable than the more common 2-piece ones? Should this, for example, influence my decision to restore it rather than part it out?

I had what was told was a 44 and it had the 1 piece head on a 1 piece block and was told they were only made for 3 years, mine was a gas tractor that had been converted with an LP head, 53 HP an on the 6 volt system, it had also been converted to the hydrolics ov the later tractors and had the live PTO unit of a UB also, been to a lot of shows since and have never seen anouther one, got rid of mine in 69

The 1 piece head was a KEF engine and the 2 piece head/block was a 283-A engine. KEF was stopped around 49 mostly. I have a 55 UTS that had a KEF put in it in place of the 283-A because of a problem with the later heads cracking and overheating. From pulling with mine I feel that the KEF is a little stronger power wise than the 283-A. Pulled against another UTS with the later engine in the same weight class and he powered out while mine spun out a little further down track ( but engine never pulled down). Just my 2 cents worth. Tim

In the MM price books I have, it shows the single
head KEF engine as an option until 1948. I do not
have the 1949 list price book. I have one 1950
book that shows the KEF and one 1950 book that
does not. There are certian areas that the single
head KEF was popular.

The 1 piece head MM engine was used on all the 4-1/4" bore engines MM made up through mid 1947. The only reason I think they might be considered rare is that there may have been some problems with cracking, although I bought a '49 UTS that had been refitted with a pre-48 engine and it ran good, but smoked.
There may have been more of the 2-piece head engines built because MM production was limited during World War 2. Lots of parts interchange. Manifolds, carburetor, cam, cam gears, crank pushrods, etc. The only parts that I am aware don't interchange are the rocker arm shaft and stands. There was also a connecting rod/piston/piston pin change from a setscrew locked piston pin to a full-floating design, but I am unsure what year.

I would encourage you to fix it, but its your tractor.

connecting rod width differs on piston pin. KEF has wider pin width if using later pistons will need to cut down width or use later rods

I always thought only the first early years of U's had the one-peice head. These engines were continuations of the earlier K or J series engines. You sure of year? If 37 or older would make more sense. I don't know the early tractors, so may be way off on this, just what I remember seeing on posts.
