ZAU Steering issue

I have a ZAU with the tricycle front end and I have a lot of slop in the steering. Almost half a steering wheel worth of play. I checked the U joint and there is very little play there, it looks like it is coming from inside the gears somewhere. It has always had "some" play but now going down the road at full speed the front wheels are shaking back and forth real fast and shaking the steering wheel.

I guess my question is, is there any adjustment to help this problem. I saw the big nut on the front end where the shaft goes in and tightened that some, but it didnt seem to help. You supposed the worm gear has worn out in there, or maybe a bearing. Any ideas before I tear the front end down???

Shep this is not reguarding your ZAU but,rather a photo I saw posted with your name under it. The pic. was of a G-1355 with a factory rops and canopy.Was woundering if you could e-mail me your phone no.? Would rather talk on phone than type (very slow). I was wanting to ask you some questions about your rops and canopy on the tractor. I am designing a rops for my G-950 and I have never seen a factory rops before. Thank you for eny help you could give me!! Adam

Had the same problem. The verticle shaft splines were worn real bad as were the splines in the axle. Had to replace both the verticle shaft and axle. Now there is no play in the steering.

Could be that the bearings are just worn some also. The steering shaft uses the pinion gear as the inner race & the outer race is in the pedestal. The big nut pushes the 2 bearings together, thus removing any play in the pinion. I don't really know how to bring the 2 gears in closer to one another when there is considerable wear between them. Grab the shaft at the u-joint & pull back & forth to check, should be zero movement, but not so tight as to bind the bearings. If this doesn't help, it may be worn gears or a bad main shaft bearins. The steer shaft pinion bearings in my UT are pretty rough, so I run them loose. I try to stay out of 5th gear!

When I was messing with the nut there on the shaft I tightened it up until the shaft no longer moved back and forth, it did some when I started. Now the shaft is snug but it still has lots of turning play.

I guess the only way to tell is to take the front end apart and see what the gears and bearings look like.

I also noticed when I repacked the wheel bearings about a month ago that there is a nut in between the two front tires that appeared kinda loose. I tried to tighten it but it would not go any more. It looks like there is a lot of play on the bottom of the bolster where the hubs are and the nut is. Is there a bearing in there as well??

Sometimes, when the lower bolster gets worn, the nut bottoms out on the shaft before it pulls everything tight. When that happens, you can add a thick washer above the nut to compensate for the wear that has occured. You can tell if that is where the slop is by having someone else turn the steering wheel for you while you watch the shaft/nut and the lower bolster to see if the shaft/gear junction at the top has play in it, or if it is all at the bottom.

I've slept since I rebuilt mine. There is a retainer that threads up in the pedestal that holds the seals & adjusts the preload on the two mainshaft bearings. If you pull the bolster off, might want to loosen the set screw & adjust that also.

Shep, Its not that hard to check out the gear. Just remember to remove the 2 bolts that go into the bottom radiator tank from the bottom, 1 on each side.

Shep,

Both the gear and the lower bolster go on the verticle shaft with tapered splines. It could be that the nut that holds one end or the other has come loose and allowed it to work and wear. Or maybe the top is just loose.
