JT/ZT similarities?

I've been trying to pick up facts on the JT tractors. Right now I am trying to build one from the ground up piece by piece using a ZT tranny (same right?). Some nice folks have been helpful with engine conversion info and a few even had some nice complete tractors. Has anyone pulled a JT? Right now I am keeping my eye out for a narrow front end. Most tractors and parts are quite a drive from the mid-Michigan area, limiting my choices. I'd like to hear some facts or experiences with these. How did the Waukesha rate compared to MM motors. Thanks guys!

I have one of each. The JT rearend is different than the ZT rearend. The JT rearend is about 6 inches shorter than the ZT. My '37 ZT is completely restored. It has the original 3 5/8 X 4 1/2 RE engine. It makes 36 hp on the dyno. I pull this tractor in the 2 plow old class and have done quite well. 1 first, a third and three forth places this year. The JT is in the middle of restoration. I plan on pulling the JT also. The engine is apart right now. It has no chassis number plate but has engine plate. The number is 378688 JE. What year is yours? Do you have engine numbers and chassis numbers for yours? I'm just tring to get an idea of what year mine is by my engine number. Any info would br great. If you have any questions about yours I would be glad to help.

Like Mark said, the JT transmission is about 6" shorter than the ZT. I've seen a photo of a very early ZT that had a spool-shaped casting to lengthen the J transmission to Z length. Guess MM didn't want to scrap any perfectly good J transmission cases.
I'm hoping the engine on mine is not going to be lots of trouble. I understand that the Waukesha used shimmed rod bearings and maybe shimmed mains. Bore is still 3-5/8. The manifold appears to be a weak point. So far, I've been quoted as high as $300 for a mainifold, $250 for one patched. I don't know about the carburetor, either. Its a Zenith, and Mine has plenty of water damage.
Does a JT Waukesha use the same oil filter cartridge as a ZT?

Do you know the reason for the 6 extra inches in a Z? Tranny the same? I think I am going to use the Z tranny because I spent practically nothing so far on this machine and I have a good start. Probably a ZT tank as well unless I find a deal on JT tank and brackets. It will be a klunker, but one of a kind. I knew a fella that had a couple JTs he may be parting out. Probably that extra transmission length was for better weight transfer. It also made room for the battery box behind the fuel tank, as well as allowing the fuel tank itself to be somewhat longer, thus gaining capacity it lost by being tapered, in comparison to the JT tank.
Also, the ZT RE engine probably developed a few more horses than the JT JE (Waukesha) engine.

We have a ZA 206 in our JTU and pull in the #5500 class, '39 & older @ our local fair. That's the only class they have, everyone cheats in a like maner, we do okay, lots of 2nd & 3rd, 1 1st since '92. Ours is probably the only one used to plow, disc, and plant 15 acres in the group. It's very dependable and is on the manure spreader every week of the winter also. Starts when below 0 with a good battery. The J has a different clutch adjusting hole than the Z, maybe some other slight differences. Had it on a dyno once, at 47 hp, it was just starting to work and they shut it off, said it had too much hp for the year, which is right. Put new Firestone 13.9-36 on it, they are about 1/2 tread now so you can see it doesn't sit much.

Joe And to keep it on topic, I don't have my JT running.....Yet. I may try pulling it, but I don't think the ZT motor in ti will have the guts to keep up with the big bore A's it will have to compete against.

Ok guys, here's the deal. I'd like to build a puller JT, but not willing to drop major money or go half way across the country to chop up a decent tractor for pulling. Being unstyled, I can piece together one from a ZT tranny, JT front end and MM engine conversion kit. Any radiator will work, but nice JT one would be best. A JT hood is simple. It will not be totally correct, but it will be MM/Twin-City pieces...including opting out on the ZA motor for a U302 engine instead. I belive if built right it will be unique and compete well. I am ready to hear constructive critisism here. What do ya say?

If I had the parts I would build one that way too. And if local rules allowed it to pull. It sounds like a great project. I have seen a ZT w/ a 220 in it. It looked good. The builder said the hardest part was plumbing the water lines. Could you use an auto style radiator and make a fiberglass twinMMcity overlay for the top tank?

I've seen a picture of an overhead valve 206(445,4star) engine in a ZB. It was on the page in Rod Beemer's MM book with the Moline universal. The ZB is behind the Universal.

Everything else would fit, but I was wondering about the water pump inlet too. On the ZB radiator The outlet is on the left and on the 206 engine the pump inlet is on the right. It might be accomplished by making a new water pump mount plate that rotates the pump inlet around to the left side.

The one I saw just used some pipe elbows and routed around the front of the motor to connect it.

Thanks Joe, The big winner in our group is a JD G with power block, has the origional tires, even with the tube sticking out of one, the guy who owns and drives it is a very good friend, 83 or 84, loves to drive the G!!!! By the way, he is a VERY good track reader, the only time I beat him was when the track was like CONCRETE. MOST of my trouble is "driver error"!! I'd like to see the pix.
