Are R-series cylinder blocks the same as the Z-series cylinder blocks? Can they be interchanged?

Part number for R and ZA cylinder blocks:
RE9034 without valves
RE9033 with valves
Both are casting number RE101A

yes and maybe. The geometry is generally same outside but may be different inside - compression ratios may or may not be same (they are not same CR for example if you put G hears on a U or visaversa).

What I have from manuals is Early ZTU (don't have later book) has RE226A for K motor and RE226C for gas. R just before 1951 used RE226D (4.6:1 on R) for K motor and RE226C (5.7:1 on R) for Gas. After 1951, the R went to RE226C (5.7:1) for K and 11A2648 for Gas with 11A2647 for Gas above 4000 feet altitude. Hope that is of some help - if you find someone with later Z Parts Manuals and earlier R books, they can fill in the blanks. Just make sure you have a matched pair.

The part #s you list here are for the heads, there are 7 different heads that I know of, have 5 of them. The blocks for the Zs and ZAs have casting# RE101A and the ZB engine had a 10A1452 "I think" casting #. They will all work on all the flathead engines and all the heads will work on all the engines. If you bore a R EE engine, you will have to find oversize DOMED pistons or use one of the 10A LP heads to get enough compression to make the thing run with any power. The 4" stroke just won't compress the bigger bore enough. If I can help, email me. John
