Anyway, I did NOT have to change rods or add any extra gaskets to the base of the blocks. I am still using the same heads that came on the 283 engine. I have never looked to see what part number they are. I can look and post it if you want to know. It has never mattered to me as I am not a puller. Just wanted a good running tractor. My pistons were worn out and I could not find a set of oversize pistons to put into my U blocks if I had them bored out. That is how I ended up going with the M5 blocks. I used a Felpro gasket set when I put it back together. I did torque the heads down to M5 specs.. instead of U specs.

Tractor pulls 65hp to 70hp on the pto dyno. I have had it on 3 different ones over the years and that was the average. Best I saw was 76hp, but I am not sure that was truely accurate. Would probably make that or more if I went to a later style manifold. I have a NOS U style manifold that I put back on it to replace the one that was busted out when I restored it. Most people go with the later style two piece manifolds.

Anyway, it will work with out any major engineering feats..

Very possible and most likely. I'll have to look at the box panel that I kept from the original box the pistons came in. I remember that they were a 5 ring piston, domed on one side with dished areas for the valves. Anyway, whatever I have works. Like I mentioned. This combination of pistons and blocks came from Lester Wenzel out of New Richland, MN. He's been around MM tractors and parts for years. I am sure what he sent me was proper for the U.
