I'm replacing the rear main seal on my 5 Star. Is there some kind of a trick for getting the upper part of the seal in? The seal is 2 felt pieces with a rubber in between. It is bigger then the hole where it is supposed to go. So if anyone has some advice for me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Shaun,
The proper way to install it is to remove the crankshaft, lube the seal and tap it gently into place using a piece of round stock the same size as the rear journal or slightly smaller.

If you loosen the main caps and drop the crank down as much as you can, The lubed seal can be pulled into place using a tool like a chinese finger trap made specificly to install rear seals.
don't cut the seals off as they are supposedly the correct length when new.

Make sure it is actually leaking at the seal rather than on the sides of the seal retainer where the two pieces seal the seal retainer to the block. They tend to leak more often than the seal itself. I pack the holes with RTV rather than use the seals provided which seems to hold better, at least for me.

John, thanks for the help with the seal. I finally got it in and got the tractor back together yesterday. I run it for a little bit, and did not see any leaks. I will be using it to do some brush cutting next week, so that will give it a good test to see if it is going to leak. Again thank you for your help. I never would have figured it out on my own.
