I'm doing the brakes on my Jet Star this weekend and would like to know if there is anything special to pay attention to. The discs and actuators where moist when I removed them which tells me the seals are bad. Is there anything special that needs special attention when replacing that seal?

I have a new shim that goes in behind that secondary plate.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

I dont know if you know about this but the spacers on the bolts need to go back in the right spots. One of the spacers is different.

I have gotten in the habit of taking all the parts to the local machine shop to have them resurfaced. I have found that too often new discs, etc. don't make me happy. When all the surfaces are flat and the discs get to make contact with 100% of the hard surfaces, the brakes work.

When replacing the brake seals, I find a plastic bottle which fits the shaft snugly. I have even heated a bottle with a hair dryer so it will strech over the splines. I have always been concerned with the cut edge of wrapped plastic cutting the edge of the seals.

Why the new shim? I'm guessing you messed up one taking apart. Most times unless there's serious wear on the pinion shaft bearings you can re-install and be o.k. with the same shim pack that came out of each side.
The inner plate that carries the seal has a drain hole that needs to be open and aim toward the bottom when its re-installed. Its supposed to catch any seepage and drain it away from the disks. Also, you need to protect the seal from the splines on the shaft when re-installing that plate. Last time I used a portion of a 20oz. pepsi bottle. I cut off top and bottom and split the straight part, rolled it up and put it inside the seal. Then I worked the pepsi bottle sleeve/tube over the splines, slid the whole mess back beyond the splines and then pulled the pepsi bottle out.
