I have just purchsed a MM "R" series completely restored and I have not received my manuals yet. When I'm turning the engine over to start the belt pulley turns as the engine rotates. Is this normal for MM's or should the pulley be disengaged?? This is my first MM and I'm still learning how it operates...Thanks, David

David,
The belt pulley on an R is driven off of the transmission input shaft. The belt pulley only turns when the clutch is engaged. I'd recommend removing the pulley and installing a cap over the stub shaft for safety reasons if you don't plan to use the pulley. I did this on the RTE I restored last year. Now I don't have to worry about accidentally getting caught in the stub shaft while the engine is running. Remember that drag in the clutch can cause the trans input shaft to turn even with the clutch disengaged. I own several R tractors so feel free to email me or ask any questions you'd like on the board and I'd be happy to answer them.

Brian

Thanks again for your information. I was on vacation so I just got a chance to answer your "Followup" to me of 09/03. Have you seen it yet?? As I continue to work my way through this tractor I'm sure I'll have many question and would like to get your input. How can we exchange e-mail addresses so we can talk direct? I would like to send you a picture of this tractor and see one of yours. Thanks again, David

Far as I know, belt pulley turns any time engine is running, no shut off. That's why they have a cover to put over shaft and remove pulley. I can't decide if I'm gonna take mine off and use cover or what? Darn thing sure is in way, if running and you get off to mess with stuff on that side of engine or tractor. Lot's of stuff on early MM"s was weird and stayed that way a long time. Even on newer ones, I'm saying.."What were they thinkin'?" alot working on them.

I'm thinking that if you don't want the pulley to operate, you can either 1. Put a cover over the shaft or 2. Leave the clutch dis-engaged when not driving. Been awhile since I paid attention to the shaft. I'm not a fan of belt pulleys. We've got one on a Farmall H with a belly mower and you can't shift right after you disengage the clutch because the bely pulley is still turning. Maybe there is a lever for engagement on the H though.
