I'm trying to find some informaion this tractor. I thinks it's a Moline U or UT. There is no serial number plate on the transmission housing. However, there is a serial number plate on the front of the tractor. The serial number on this plate reads 0194900313 and the Model reads 4 1/4x5 283A. I'm intrested in any information pertaining to this model tractor. It was my grandfathers and I'd like to restore it back to original condition. One additional question, Is there a 3 point hitch that can be added to this tractor? By the way, this tractor can be seen at the following web address:

Thanks in advance, Chris

Chris, Your engine serial # indicates your tractor is a 1949 U. The fourth and fifth digits in the serial # are the year (49). The first 3 digits (019) indicate its a 283A-4 engine used in a tractor (U series). Your relatively low engine serial number of 313 would indicate your tractor was built early in 1949 (if the engine is original and not swapped out sometime in the tractors lifetime) as they made 9491 283A-4 engines in 1949 for use in tractors (all U series). I've got my grandfathers 1949 UTU also that I'm restoring. It was the 28th UTU built in 1949 and has the 18th 283A-4 tractor engine built in 1949. I wasn't able to load your pics (too slow of a connection) but from Bill's comments below I'd say with much certainty you've got a 1949 U. Unfortunately there are no known records to correlate an engine serial # to a tractor serial #. The UT series was made from 1938 to 1955 with the 1938-1941 models having a red nose similar to an R or ZT series and the 1942-1955 UT models have a bar grill.

Hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Brian

From the picture, it looks like your tractor is a 1948 - 1952 UTU. The tractor has a split head which Moline began using on the U's in 1948. It will be difficult to put a 3 point hitch on this tractor because of where the seat is located. good luck with this project. These tractors are pretty common and parts are reasonable.

the number you have is the engine serial number which is for a UT with a 283A-4 gasoline engine. You can not put a 3pt on this tractor

the UT was built between 1940 and 1948
