I have the engine in my UB torn down searching for a coolant leak, cracked block by the way. Anyway, the bores measure 4.375" rather than the standard 4.250" and the pistons which are stamped "standard" measure 4.372". I believe the only MM engine with a 4.375" bore is a 451 diesel. So I'm assuming 451 diesel pistons are in this engine. Just curious if this is an acceptable practice and when I put this engine back together should I buy rings for a 451 diesel engine? Does it sound like I'm on the right path? Thanks for any rsponses!!

The M and W pistons were sometimes marked standard even though they were .125 oversize. You will have to measure each rings thickness and find a set that matches those measurements. Most engine shops have a book listing rings by dimension as well as application. Some even have the m & w listings as well.I assume you will just get another block and bore it to fit those pistons.

Bill, Thanks for the information. Do you know if there are any identifying marks on M & W pistons. And, yes I am replacing the block but haven't found one yet. Thanks, Gary

They usually have M & W cast on the inside of the piston or a part number that is cast inside the piston that will identify it as an M & W. What part of the country are you in maybe some one on here has a block and is near you.

Gary,

I have set of blocks that came off my 1948 UTU.. I am pretty sure they are still stock.. or standard bore. Would one of them work for you?? Are they the same as the UB? I will check the casting number for you and see if it is the same.

I pulled these off my Moline 3 or 4 years ago and bought M5 Blocks and M&W high compression pistons. The reason I did that was my pistons were worn out in the ring lands. The gaps the rings sit in were out of tolerance. I could not get spacers to fit. At the time, no one had any aftermarket or NOS pistons sitting around. I could not even find a set of used ones to put in.

These blocks are sitting down in the shop under a bench. I have no plans on using them. I will get the casting number off of them and post it here as well as check the condition of them.

As for my location. I am on the westside of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Phil
