Is the KEF motor better than the 283A-4 in ta UTS or the other way around?Which one gives the least trouble and the most power?

It's hard to say which is more reliable, probably the 283A-4 because of the distributor ignition and the cylinders cast in pairs. I'm not sure if their is a power difference. I would think the only power difference would be allowing you to change out several different heads, and maybe they got a power increase if they upped the governed speed.

The KEF engine has fewer cylinder head options. I think that's the really big deal with tractor pullers. That and also the crankcase will accept blocks of larger bore from later model tractors.

(Although I have privately wondered why a tractor couldn't be set up with KEF block and 2 heads. The only difficulty is getting oil to the back rocker arm. I even bet there's been one built somewhere.)
Bore and stroke are the same. I think the crankshaft bearings are the same. The KEC? had different bearings,though.
Also, the KEF could be retrofitted with a distribuitor and probably some applications were factory with distribuitor ignition.

I have the KEF in the UTS I was given. Head is marked H-C on side, was told that this meant high compression. This tractor will be used on the farm and for parades with a few antique pulls locally, slow speed stock pulls. I just did not know that there was a difference until the manual came in today and wondered which was the better motor.

The H-C heads on most KEF engines are for gasolene, the low compression heads were for tractor fuel.

Is that the single block motor you are talking about? Years ago I had a supposed to be a 44 UTU that had the single block and the head was a high compression head with a smaller diameter spark plug, was told it was a LP Gas head and put out either 53 or 55 pto hp on the dyno

Yes single block motor, very large plugs, factory LPG. Learned the difference in the KEC and the KEF motor today. KEC had babbet rods and KEF had replacable insert bearings in the rods. Otherwise the same motor.
