MM 585 cubic inch engine problems

I have dealt with the 585 engine on several tractors with various problems resulting in design failure. The evident problems are that the rod bolts should not be reused, but some people do this anyway overstretching the rods. Also, some manuals print the rod bolt torque spec as 85 foot pounds when it should really be only 65 pounds. The next problem is the oil pump, since it strips out the cam gears resulting in the aftermarket kit to be put on. Two engines that i have both spun bearings at one time in their life while several others have been rebuilt or blew apart in the past with external holes looking into the crankcase. Another thing is that some of the blocks had piston coolers while others didn't. If the tolerances aren't right, the piston will heat up causing stress on the rod where the bolts will break and end up with the rod through the side of the crankcase. What do some of you think is the main problem with this engine, it is basically just a bored and stroked 504 motor. There seems to be several failures, but which one was the biggest factor in these blowing up?

Some of the problems which you mentioned, I have heard from collectors, pullers, and mechanics. The 585 has a different valve/head/cam setup. I belive the intake and exhaust are different. The blocks do not match a 504 type and bolt pattern. I do not know the specifics of the 585. It is newer than the old motors I "tinker" with. There are some fine running 585 engines out there, but one must know the ins and outs of rebuilding them. Doug Henderson would be a good man to contact. He has dealt with 585 motors for a few years. Thanks for listing some of the 585 concerns. I usually don't hear so much about them.

The biggest problem we had was valves breaking and destroying pistons and cylinders.The external oil pump was just as big a problem as the internal one.The preasure relief valve just passes oil from one side of the pump to the other.when it sticks open the pump looses prime and all oil preasure.that realief valve will stick as it works in unfiltered oil.Adding a footvalve in the intake hose helps.

The only oil pump problem seems that when they are cold, it will suck the sump dry and loose some oil pressure, so it has to warm up before using it, that's all with the pumps.
