After having the tractor outside but under cover for 2 years, unrun, it started up and ran relatively well, tho on 3 cylinders. It had a stuck intake valve--oil has been changed, and filter. I freed the valve and it ran pretty well, tho with some cutting out, displaying symptoms of fuel contamination, water or sediment. Replaced sed bowl, cleaned filter screen, flushed some particles out of tank, until tank was completely clean. Ran fairly well until it got warm and running on rough ground, it would cut out from steady state rpm, still displaying fuel contam symptoms. Had a shop rebuild carb, replaced coil, and it will start and run fine for 5 to 15 minutes at various rpms, under no load. Periodically it just chokes down and catches itself, regains rpms, runs a while longer, cuts out again, sometimes cutting out to the extent of quitting. It doesn't seem to be in the fuel. I will replace the plugs and wires, and would appreciate any other comments as to what is causing this erratic behavior. When it runs well it purrs like a kitten, but then suddenly up and quits, and then runs well again. Finally it will after 15 to 20 minutes just quit, and then later, an hour later, after cooling down, it will start again and go thru the same cycle. Some backfiring occurs during these episodes, but not always. The sporadic nature is what has me puzzled. Thanks for any help.

I really want to thank you all for the great advice. Since I had already done so much work on the fuel system, ie, thorough tank cleaning, sediment bowl, rebuilt carb, etc., and since it seemed to be getting fuel just fine, I got started on the ignition system. Today I put in new plugs, wires, distrib cap, points, condenser and rotor, and fired it up. It caught after about half a turn and ran better than it has in years, just that real nice MM ticking along. I let it get good and warm, and no choking down at all. Haven't run it under heavy load yet, but based on how it's running I think it is FIXED. My wife suggested I put back the old condenser just to be sure, and I decided to skip that. Considering I've changed everything except the anti-freeze and the tires, I hope this will get me back in business with this tractor. Again, I REALLY appreciate your insights and help. I've had this machine for 19 years, and really didn't want to give up on it.

Mike

Mike, try replacing the points and condenser, and never assume that a new condenser is a good condenser.I feel sure your problem is electrical.

I see you relpaced the coil but you didn't mention the points & condenser. I have recently had 2 new condensers that exhibited similar running then backfiring & quitting only to start up after a few minutes. The one would idle fairly smooth for quite some time without quitting but if run faster would spit & sputter then quit.

Hope this helps

John

Mike, I'm a simpleton. I would be suspect of fuel delivery. The others fellows' suggestions on the electrical are good ones, not to be ignored. I would stand right by the tractor as it's on it's way down. When the engine stops, I would immediately pull the plug on the carburater and see what comes out; it should be a stream, not drops. You mentioned backfiring which is often caused by a lean mixture of fuel. My 4 star has been down twice inexplicably. Both times it was valve related. I lost two cylinders once due to a broken exhaust spring on no. 4. The other time it was a fatigued spring under exhaust valve no.1. I am also leary of "new style" needles and seats. I don't like the neopreme needles, they generally affect float level and volume of fuel passage and can "stick". I cling to the brass ones whenever possible.
