ZAU Decals

Getting ready to paint a 1949 ZAU thats been in the family since new. It still has original paint and decals. There is no Z decal anywhere on the hood and the mm script seems different than the repro decals I've looked at. Any suggestions on what I should do? I want to keep this ole boy as original as I can.

Thanks guys for your help! From what I can tell from the 50+ year old decals on it, they appear to have been white trimmed in black letters with a very tiny made in USA printed on the bottom of the last E. Also there is an MM on the seat back and gas tank sides . They are very faded and I'm not sure if they are the same as the repros, but they all appear the same. I plan to contact Gaylen Mohr soon. Do you know what part of the country he's in? THANKS AGAIN

Robin and Kelvin, I can not prove this but I believe the white background you have on the old decals was originally red and has faded over half a century, and now appears white.
My old literature shows the 1949 hood decals to be red background and black letters, but we have to remember that the literature was done by the graphic arts department at the ad agency, not the paint department in the factory. Next time I get to Homestead, IA I will ask Oren Schmidt if he recalls. He once told me that he worked at the MM factory and often would start them up at the end of the assembly line and drive them to the yard.

John, I greatly appreciate your imformation so I went back to the barn for another look. I can't seem to find any red color at all, unless like you said it has faded to look white. When I was a kid there always seemed to be a little oil blow by on right side, next to the air intake. A small section of the MOLINE is a brighter white from being protected by the dust. These letters really appear like white trimmed in black 3-D letters on just the yellow painted background. I really hate to sweat this small stuff but as you guys know the older these tractors get the less untouched originals we've got to reference from! Thanks for the help. I really enjoy this website.

Mohr's are in Vail, Iowa. That's in the western part of Iowa. They've got a great MM museum too. Well worth the trip if you're into MM items as well as tractors.

The 1949's to my knowledge, did not have a "Z" on the hood. They only had Minneapolis-Moline in red letters on the hood, and had a MM decal on each side of the gas tank. They didn't use the "Z" until they came with the 1950's newer style Minneapolis-Moline on the hoods as the ZB's UB's etc. had on them. They also had a MM decal on the back of the seat between the bolts that hold on the cushion.

Alan is correct. No Z decal on the 49 ZA. Check out the link below for correct decal placement. compliments of Green's MM Pulling page and the MM Corresponder Magazine.
Gaylen Mohr (712 677-2491) makes excellent decals both in color and correct lettering. He has a new 4X7 Z decal for the gas tank that reads Universal Z in the middle of the MM, but I believe it is correct for the older ZT's and not your ZA. Gaylen can advise you what is correct for your 49. He will be interested in knowing exactly what wording is on your original and might reproduce for you, so have the information in hand when you call him.
