David,
I have an R MM that had almost the whole area under the vavle covers pushed out by freezing before I got it. I ground the edges, welded the pieces back in place to hold them from moving, sand blasted all the joints then applied JB Weld in a couple coats to seal it all. It has not leaked a drop in over 10 years & we use it while making hay so it does get warmed up.

John

I resurrected an R that both blocks were cracked and re-welded that way too. I had somebody sandblast that area, ground it some with a die grinder, and coated it good with JB weld. It seems to be holding.
If the crack is only 1-1/2" and on the outside, I think I would first try cleaning and v-grooving it a little with a die grinder and just put the JB weld in the crack. I think it'll seal up without welding.
If its cracked just below the head, remove the valve cover plates and check in there, too.

The RE-101-A block is the same and will work. Just that if you want to restore it correctly, you need the later block casting #.

Weld it. Procure cast-iron welding rod from a welding supply. It is usually a black fluxed rod.
V out the crack and weld as far as your thumb nail is wide, peen the weld until it is cool enough to hold your finger on it and not burn you. Go again. I have done this with no problems. No preheating needed.
