Ive been pulling tractor for about ten years mostly green ones.(currantly a JD 70).It does a real good job but Ive always wanted to build a moline . I pull the 7500,8500,9500# classes what kind of power do I need, and do I need four or six cylinders? Also how big should I go with it?My 70 is 750ci but I dont think i need that much in a moline to make it run like my Deere.

What are some of the rules you have to go by? This would help with an answer. If you can, go with a 6 cylinder. Irrigation motors parts are not that hard to find to put into a 6 cylinder motor. Four cylinder tractor can be made to run in the classes you mentioned with not to much work to be able to run with the JD. We have a 618 cid. UB that runs real well in classes from 5500 up to 8500 (not many 9500 antique classes around here). It usually has no problem with the two cylinder John Deere unless a driver error occurs.

we just built a ub with 500cubes and it holds its own with with jd in the 750 range. we wanted a reliable motor we weren't working on all the time. its been down the track about a dozen times with a 2nd a 4th and 2 5thsthe other times we were mid pack because we weren't weighted right.this is open rpm and no speed limit class we pulled a couple times in a 3mph class still learning there also when the governor kicks in on a moline you need the right tires to get a bite.i know a bunch will jump on me say you got to go bigger but were happy well for now.

In the classes with speed limits, I have found smaller tough motors do ok. I pull a UB with a very stock oddball 340 motor. It is a 4.25x6. I am consistently in the top 4 of the pack in the 2.8 mph class and somewhat respectable in the 4.5mph. However, the 340 cube motor in not quite enough for 3rd gear in 5500. With a little compression and motor work it could be there. There is a Case 400 built to 350 cubes that really rips and beats us regularly. Good luck with your 500.

Well sorry but i am gonna jump in on this conv... We pull two '39 M farmalls..on our 281 we found that tires were the key and regularly beat a 400 cube farmall, a 650 cube G, and 600 G with a differential in it..we are pulling 3.5 mph...our other M we lightened it up to 4500 and with 264 we pull 2nd in 4500 and 1st gear in 5000....Gears, weight placement, and tires are all key roles in pulling...horse power is nothing if not gotten to the ground

Bring the Ms over and let's plow and disc all spring and summer, "which my U does", and then lets go pull! I pull a stock UTS LP in the 6500# class and a Dennys Carb Shop "M" motor can't do any better than I do and it never comes out of the shed except to pull. Mine still has the 2 gaskets per valve cover that the farmer before me put on. The M does blow some impressive "O" rings out of the exhaust tho! So does the owner of the M.

Farmall Boy,

You need to take it easy. He never said anything about you having Denny's parts or disrespected you. You are the one blowing up at him, not him at you. Thins is NOT the tractor pulling board, we treat people with respect on the Moline board. Your the one who came here bragging about your "M" on a question about pulling a MM.

Farmal Boy,

The original post was asking for information about pulling Minneapolis Moline's not asking about how to pull. He asked on this board so that he would get an honest answer not every Tom, Dick, and Harry giving him advice he didn't ask for. As for you GRAND and GLORIUS M's, they might as well be stock compared to what the original poster for this topic wants to build. And yes I know how to pull and have four pulling tractors ranging from a 750 cid. GB to a small 426 cid. speed limit UB.

To answer your question, any MM can be a good puller. I am not sure what type of class you pull in. Stock to hot-rod, they can have as much as you want. As far as 6 cyl, you are unlimited with what you can accomplish. If you would like to go smaller, a U or UB can compete from 4500-8500. All the blocks and heads are interchangeable (more or less). 5 stars are becoming increasingly popular and parts are readily availiable if you know where to look. Let me know what classes you would like to pull and I would be glad to give my 2 cents and so would many more I'm sure. Sounds like a strong JD 70 you have there. Good luck!

Sounds like you need to get yourself a MM GVI. You have several engine options. You can put bigger G1000 blocks on a GVI to bump up to 504 cubes give or take a few. You can swap cranks to get a 605 or simply modify a 605 engine (uses tall blocks). The ultimate is an HD800 motor although the older 800s work well with good heads I hear. The HD800 is nearly indestructable or so I hear. More experienced pullers can give you better details. There is a 800 with factory tubo being sold at an MM auction with about two dozen other tractors and lots of parts. It is near Indianapolis. Feel free to e-mail me for details. That's my 2 cents. I do not pull any big or fast classes and my motors are good, but nothing fancy. I have a GBD, UTU, R, JetStar, and UBD. There's plenty of MM people out there that will share info as I've found out first hand. Good luck.

Tyler,
Yes, a super 95 is the same as GVI.
