Hercules engine rebuild

Hello All,

I am starting to search for a rebuild kit for my IXB hercules engine. Where is a good place to get a complete kit? Any ideas on where to find gaskets for it? I would like to remove thehead to check the pistons but don't want to pull it until I have a new gasket.

This engine, the IXB3-SL, I think, has been sitting for quite some time. I just had the carb rebuilt and finally got it to run. It has an enormous amount of blowby. I ran fresh oil and a cleaner through it but it still runs rough and the blow-by is still too much. My next idea is to pull a piston out and measure everything. I checked the compression and all four cylinders are around 110 psi but leak down at about 20 psi in 10 seconds or so. This is the same in all cylinders. So far I have replaced the wires, plugs (Bosch w8ac), adjusted the vavles, had carb rebuilt (Motec rebuild) and replaced the entire wire harness. Any tips or suggestions?

For a complete over-haul kit call M&M surplus 718-828-9026. For individual parts (such as your head gasket) go to your local NAPA. I think your compression is pretty good. I have a MM BG that runs well on a 100 psi. I would check carburetor adjustment. Make sure you have good spark from your coil, also check coil resistance. Make sure you have good spark at your plugs. Point setting should be about .021. Firing order is 1243. Check your timing(if you need help with this let me know). Most important check for leaks around intake manifold, if in doubt remove and check to make sure it is flat. If you do remove it then go ahead and remove valve cover. Check valve adjustment, on a cold engine it should be .008 for intake valves and .010 for exhaust. You need to be sure your crank case vent is clean. Hope this helps D. Miller
