I finally got my '47 RTU project tractor running earlier this month. It starts up well, runs pretty smoothly, however it lacks power. 1st through 3rd gears are just fine. But going from 3rd to 4th it really loads down. If I am going downhill, or any kind of down grade, it's fine. But on a flat grade, it really loads up, and I can forget about trying to climb any kind of grade - not just hills, but a rise in the driveway will nearly stop it. It loads up so much that I'm afraid I'll break the crankshaft if I let it run too long that way.Before I go start a complete engine rebuild, I was wondering if any of you might be able to suggest some other causes for this lack of power. It runs smoothly at all speeds in 1st-3rd gears, so it doesn't seem that ignition timing would be the cause. Valve clearance has been set properly, though I may have a worn out camshaft (could valve timing and duration be an issue?). The carb has been cleaned, though not rebuilt. using the hand crank, it feels like it has good compression, though it may very well need new rings/pistons. And the governor seems to work alright...of course it could be a combination of all the obove. Talk about a tall request! Thank you for your help. Regards, Kyle Sands <>< Huntley, MN
